  1. The Yangtze River basin is a crucial ecological barrier in China.Over the past few decades, intense climate changes and human activities have altered the natural landscape of the Yangtze River basin, leading to changes in its ecosystem structure and degradation of ecosystem functions. This study utilized the vigor-organization-resilience-ecosystem service function evaluation framework to assess the ecosystem health level in the Yangtze River basin from 2000 to 2020 at the county scale.Spatial autocorrelation methods were utilized to analyze the spatial aggregation of ecosystem health, and the independent and joint effects of drivers and the spatial variation of drivers were explored using the optimal parametric geographical detector model and geographically weighted regression model. The results indicated that (1) the ecosystem health level of the Yangtze River Basin was better overall, with an average EHI of 0545.This value was higher in the middle and lower reaches than in the upper reaches, and higher in the south than in the north. The areas with higher ecosystem levels were mainly distributed in and around forest land, and the overall ecosystem health level in the Yangtze River basin showed an improving trend over the last two decades; (2) There was a significant spatial clustering effect in the ecosystem health levels of the Yangtze River basin, and the degree of spatial clustering showed a decreasing trend; (3) Regarding driving factors, the dominant factors were land use intensity and the proportion of forest land.Natural factors exerted a positive influence on most areas of the basin, while socio-economic factors had a negative influence, with their impact on the ecosystem health of the Yangtze River basin surpassing that of natural factors. This study provided theoretical references for the protection and management of the Yangtze River basin ecosystem, promoting its sustainable and coordinated development
