Spatial-temporal Evolution of Environmental Regulation Intensity and Influencing Factors in China

  1. From the perspective of the heterogeneity of environmental regulation tools, we reconstructed the index system for measuring environmental regulation intensity in Chinese regions.The entropy method was used to weight regional environmental regulation intensity indices.The spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of China's environmental regulation intensity and associated driving mechanism were examined.The results showed that: (1) From 2000 to 2020, China's regional environmental regulation intensity as a whole showed a fluctuating upward trend, and the stage characteristics were obvious.(2) There existed significant regional differences in China's environmental regulation intensity, and the trend was widening, showing an overall gradient differentiation characteristic.(3) There was a significant positive spatial correlation of environmental regulation in China, with low-value agglomeration predominating before 2010, but no dominant type of agglomeration after 2010, and more diversified strategic interactions between regions in terms of environmental regulation.(4) The local spatial structure of environmental regulation intensity was relatively stable in the vast majority of China's provinces, but the type of spatial correlation changed in more than half of the provinces.(5) At different stages, there existed significant heterogeneity in the effects of factors such as the level of economic development, industrial structure, government intervention, degree of openness, human capital and degree of urbanization on the spatial differentiation of environmental regulation intensity in China.The interaction of these factors was mainly strengthened by a two-factor interaction
