Abstract: This paper took the cultivated land use in the Nanjing Metropolitan Area as the research object. A "space-function-mode" trinity multi-dimensional evaluation index system was constructed. The methods adopted included the entropy weight method, comprehensive measurement model, exploratory spatial data analysis, and kernel density estimation. This research showed that: (1) In terms of temporal evolution, the comprehensive transformation index presented an "N"-shaped fluctuation trend. The spatial distribution showed a pattern of northern dominance. Both spatial transformation and functional transformation experienced a "U"-shaped evolution, forming significant spatial differentiation. The pattern transformation grew continuously, and its spatial expansion showed a gradient diffusion characteristic of "east → west → whole region". (2) In terms of spatial evolution, the overall transformation difference presented a "expansion-convergence" trend. The provincial-level differences showed the characteristic of differential convergence between Anhui and Jiangsu. Spatial analysis revealed that there were significant agglomeration characteristics. The global Moran's I index showed a positive spatial correlation (0.44 for the comprehensive index, 0.49 for the spatial index, and 0.41 for the functional index), with cold and hot spots forming a gradient distribution pattern. (3) In terms of gravity center movement, the migration of the gravity center presented a centripetal agglomeration pattern. The gravity center of the comprehensive transformation shifted a disctance of 21.7 km to the northwest. The spatial transformation formed a dual-core driving pattern of "Chuzhou-Huai'an", and the pattern transformation showed an axial evolution from southeast to northwest. (4) The green transformation of cultivated land demonstrated multi-dimensional synergetic characteristics and spatiotemporal heterogeneity, thus it was necessary to construct a governance mechanism of "north-south coordination, inter-provincial linkage, and dynamic regulation". Due to the significant temporal and spatial differences in the green transformation of cultivated land use in metropolitan circles, there existed typical agglomeration characteristics and a gradient distribution pattern, with an obvious shift in the focus of transformation. Therefore, it was necessary to establish a cross-regional healthy coordination mechanism to narrow regional gaps, and to promote a green and low-carbon agricultural technology system. The inter-provincial transformation coordination should also be strengthened, and the cultivated land ecological restoration and pollution control should be enhanced. It was also suggested to accurately allocate restoration resources, improve transformation shortcomings in a classified manner, and improve the long-term incentive mechanism for cultivated land protection.
