HEALTH EVALUATION SYSTEM OF THE WATERLEVELFLUCTUATION ZONE IN THE THREE GORGES AREA

Abstract: The future waterlevelfluctuation zone formed by the operation of the Three Gorges Dam will be a complex ecohealth problem in the reservoir area. Most studies have focussed on the utilization of the waterlevelfluctuation zone, but the protection or utilization models will influence the developing trends of the health and stability status of this special zone. This paper discribes the formation and the definition of the waterlevel flutuation zone in the Three Gorges Region based on the analysis of the factors affecting the health state. Then the paper puts forward an evaluation system involving indicators in three groups: structural indicators, functional indicators and environmental indicatiors, which have subfactors under each category. In the design of the evaluation system, the subject zone is regarded as the type similar to wetland and the impacts of human activities on the zone have attracted great attention. Taking Kaixian County as a case, this evaluation system is used to forecast the health state under different protection or utilization models of the future waterfluctuationzone in the paper.
